A male lumpsucker, Cyclopterus lumpus, guarding its nest. The male fish will tenaciously guard the eggs against predators, even to the point of being stranded at low spring tide. This one was found at an exceptionally low equinoctial tide; it was lucky that a small pool of water remained right by the nest. Others are not so lucky, and may get dried out, killed by frosts in cold weather, or attacked by seabirds.
